Are You Ready For Online Learning? Print E-mail

Do you wonder if online learning at MNOHS is for you? Be sure to try the quiz listed further down on this page.  Also be sure to read the MNOHS Student Handbook and the MNOHS Parent Handbook .

To succeed in an online program, it's helpful to have:
• good reading and writing skills
• study skills
• time management skills
• a degree of comfort with computers and the Internet
• the willingness to ask for help when you need it
• the willingness to make a consistent effort

In our many years of teaching online, MNOHS faculty and students report that a consistent effort is the most important factor in a student's achievement. Putting forth this effort is your best guarantee that you will:

• enjoy your classes and learn as much as possible
• stay on track for graduation
• be ready for college and a career

At Minnesota Online High School you have the flexibility to participate when and how you learn best (4 p.m., glass of orange juice, perfectly quiet house or 2 a.m., cold fried chicken, listening to the radio, etc.). You can read material at your own pace to maximize your learning, plus you'll get individual attention from your online teachers. Most of all, you can expect a lot of personal support from MNOHS faculty, staff, and other students. We’re here to encourage you--to offer the guidance, success strategies, and tools that you'll need to "drive your own progress forward."

Our students have also told us that online learning works best if you are choosing it. If you are thinking of enrolling only because your parents want you to graduate, try to figure out what excites you about this learning opportunity.

Self quiz

Here is a short quiz derveloped by Georgia Virtual School that can help you determine whether your current attitude, skills, and study habits are right for an online school.  The scoring on the quiz is a little confusing, but it does a good job of summarizing what high school students need to have or think about before they start taking courses online.

Don't forget to read the MNOHS Student Hanbook and the MNOHS Parent HandbookThey are your best guide to what it means to be a MNOHS student.

What do you need to succeed as an online student?
Reading and writing skills are important.
A large part of online learning relies on reading and writing so your skills in these two areas need to be good enough to communicate ideas. These skills will also improve while you are attending MNOHS because you will spend so much time using them. If you enjoy reading or writing in your spare time, you are a good candidate for an online program. If you are not-quite-confident about these activities and serious about improving, we can give you the help you need. But if you're unhappy reading or writing, you may want to think about whether another school is a better match for you.

You need regular access to a computer with Internet.
Students are expected to be online every day, Monday through Friday. Please see the Computer Requirements page in this section of the web site.

You need to be comfortable using a computer. These are skills that you will use frequently in your courses:

Typing and using the basic features of a word processing program like Microsoft Word, such as highlighting text, copying and pasting.

Downloading and saving files to your hard drive and attaching files to e-mail messages.

It is important to understand what a directory is and how the system of drives and folders can be used to organize your work.

You should know how to search your hard drive for a lost file.

A basic understanding of the Internet is also critical. You need to know how to bookmark favorite sites, do simple Internet searches, and go directly to a website when you know the URL.

You will want to identify someone local for tech support.
If you are not comfortable downloading and installing software from the Internet, you will want to identify someone (a family member or friend) who will help you with this before you enroll and start the MNOHS Orientation to Online Learning.
