Special Education Services Print E-mail

Minnesota Online High School provides a continuum of services for students who qualify for special education services.  Because we are an online high school and do not have a bricks-and-mortar site, for some students this may mean contracting with or purchasing programming from other entities.

In addition to working with the MNOHS special education staff to develop and implement IEPs, special education students may enroll in these MNOHS courses which provide additional support:

Essential Lanugage Arts 1 A & B, 2 A & B (0.5 credit per semester) -- This year-long sequence focuses on developing reading comprehension, writing skills, vocabulary skills, and phonics skills through the use of high-interest literature. In their first semester, students will explore poetry, biographies, essays, nonfiction, journals and articles. In their second semester, students will study short stories, novels, speeches, and drama. Students will also work on developing functional reading and writing skills (job applications, leases, credit card applications, car loans, etc.).

Transition

Transition
is the meaningful practice of setting goals and attaining skills to move successfully from secondary to post-secondary environments. This course creates a space where students can develop self-advocacy and critical thinking skills to make decisions in real world settings. Students are posed with the question “What will life be like after high school?”
To solve this question, students are asked to embark on quests which lead to goals in the areas of employment, training or college, independent living, and community, recreation and leisure. Students investigate interests, strengths, needs and how to accommodate challenges. Students develop knowledge of how to self monitor and begin to work on gaining skills needed to complete goals, such as being able to: plan a meal, budget finances, use a checking account, improve interactions within the community, and apply for a job. During the semester, students will explore resources within their community to build a network of support.  The culminating activity is to collaborate with family, schools, government and non-profit organizations to build a plan for success after high school that incorporates all these facets.
Course Materials: Internet resources and networking in student’s community to develop a post-secondary plan.

Standards met: Minnesota Secondary Transition Toolkit, and follows recommendations from the National Secondary Transition Technical Assistance Center.

Credit: Depends on the student’s needs
